Traffic came to a grinding halt for several hours in many areas including Punjagutta, Khairatabad, Somajiguda, Lakdi-Ka-Pul, Ameerpet, Raj Bhavan, Dilsukhnagar, Saidabad, Paradise, Ranigunj, and MG Road.
Two-wheeler riders suffered the most in front of the chief minister's camp office at Greenlands as many vehicles broke down on the flooded road. Even on the Punjagutta flyover, two vehicles broke down causing heavy traffic jam.
There was water-logging on the main roads including near Model House at Punjagutta, Kavadiguda, M G Road, Lake View guest house, Kalaniketan at Dilsukhnagar, Mytrivanam at Ameerpet, Begumpet and other places.
The heavy rain paralysed normal life as several low-lying areas were inundated at Mahabharatnagar, Maruti Nagar, Maqta, Nawab Saheb Kunta in the Old City, colonies around Balkapur channel and Feelkhana near Begum Bazar.
The emergency cell of GHMC was flooded with frantic calls from various localities in the city about waterlogging and inundation. Emergency squads rushed to some troubled areas, and pumped out the water.
According to Met officials, the total rainfall received during the spell was 4.3 cm between 5.30 pm and 8.30pm. They said rain would continue. Power supply was disrupted in many localities. "Teams are working to restore power supply at Shapur and IDL sub-stations," said a CPDCL official.
The GHMC officials were on their toes when there were rumours that there was some problem with the Punjagutta flyover. The engineering wing officials reached the flyover and thoroughly checked it and found it was only a rumour.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who is in Chittoor, reviewed the situation with the GHMC commissioner C V S K Sarma and traffic additional commissioner V S K Kaumudi and directed them to be alert and take necessary steps to clear the traffic
